REALISM
Galerie Jan Reinder Adema
April 12/13, 19/20, 26/27 and May 3/4 2024
‘Realism: depicting reality’
In realistic or figurative art, as a counterpart to abstract art, observable reality is depicted in a recognizable way. It emphasizes a faithful, technically correct representation of the subject in all its facets. This art movement received less attention for a while after 1945, due to the rise of modernism in the Netherlands, including the Cobra Group. However, due to the special quality and the renewed attention for this movement, the tide has turned again. In Galerie Jan Reinder Adema you can see work by the following artists from this art form, including oil paintings, pastels and graphics.
Matthijs Röling (1943) is the figurehead of contemporary figurative Dutch painting and Northern realism and is also called “the youngest of the old masters”.
Jeanne Oosting (1898 – 1994) was a versatile artist and made groundbreaking graphics during her Paris period.
In 2022, a major retrospective exhibition entitled “Jeanne’s Summer” was on display in various museums in the Netherlands.
J.H. Jurres (1875 – 1946) was professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He mainly painted biblical scenes and highlights from world literature.
René Jansen (1956 – 2022) created tangible atmospheres with his still lifes, full of passion and life, with the layering and lived-in quality of a fresco.
Mattie van der Veen (1974) was educated at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. She makes special pastels with a great sense of light – dark contrast and surprising compositions.

Mijn Atelier, Mijn Werk
July 2th – September 24th 2023
Rob Møhlmann invited 164 fellow artists to participate in My Atelier – My Work. They show a large format studio photo, and an original work, whether or not for sale. Such a thing has never happened before. In addition, Møhlmann also made ‘Het Groot Atelierboek’. With this, the artist wants to thank ‘his’ artists for literally ‘giving shape and color’ to his museum over the past 25 years; his gift to them. With a studio and a work, there are in fact 164 extraordinary, very personal artist portraits here.
